thin-thinner-thinnest
hot-hotter-hottest |

He is older than I.(彼は私より年上だ)<叙述用法にelderは使えない> |
My elder brother is an artist.(私の兄は芸術家だ) |
one's eldest son (長男), one's second son (次男), one's third son (三男), one's eldest brother (長兄), one's second elder brother (次兄)
I got up later than usual.(いつもより遅く起きた) |
Friday comes in the latter part of the week.(金曜日は週の後半に来る) |
Go a little farther.(もっと遠くへ行け) |
Let's discuss it no further.(これ以上議論はよそう) |
Japanese, English, Russian, Korean, American, Chineseなど。
one, two, three, …; first, second, third, …
He is tall. She runs fast.
15-2-1-1. A 〜 as 原級 as B → (A=B)
He is as tall as his father.(彼は彼のおとうさんと同じぐらいの背の高さです) |
He could run as fast as they.(彼は彼らと同じぐらい速く走ることができた) |
The boy has as many books as his brother (has).(その男の子は兄と同じぐらいたくさんの本を持っている) |
ビートルズの歌詞に出て来るas〜as (主語) can beとas can beは同じか
Nowhere Man | He's as blind as he can be(彼はできるだけ現実から目をそむけている) 元はHe's as blind as he can be blind → He's as blind as he can be (blind) → He's (as) blind as he can be (blind) → He's (as) blind as (he) can be (blind) He's blind as can beとなり、I Feel FineのShe's happy as can beと同じような文になる。 |
Glass Onion | You know that we're as close as can be(我々はとても仲が良かったんだ) |
Wait | I've been good, as good as I can be(僕はずっと忠実だった、これ以上なく) |
I Feel Fine | She's (as) happy as can be, you know(彼女はこの上なく[最高に]幸せなんだ) 最初のasは省略されています。 |
15-2-1-2. A 〜 not as (so) 原級 as B → (A<B)
Sound does not travel so fast in the air as (it does) in the water.(音は空中では水中ほど速くは伝わらない) |
A the size of B (= A 〜 as big (large) as B) |
An ostrich lays an egg the size of a softball.(= 〜 an egg as big as a softball.)(ダチョウはソッフトボール大の卵を産む) |
15-2-2. 比較級
A 〜 比較級 than B |
My sister is taller than I.(妹は私より身長が高い) |
She spoke more fluently than he (did).(彼女は彼より流暢にしゃべった) |
Health is much more important than money.(健康の方がお金よりずっと重要だ) |
I'm three years older [younger] than my sister. I'm older [younger] than my sister by three years. |
(a) | Show me a longer one.(もっと長いのを見せてください) |
---|---|
(b) | Yesterday he was bad enough, and this morning he has turned worse.(昨日彼の容体はすでに悪かったが、今朝になってもっと悪化した) (a)では「ここにあるものよりも」、(b)では「昨日よりも」などが省略されている。 |
(a) | He is superior in learning to me.(学識の点では私よりも優れている) |
---|---|
(b) | He is junior to me in the office.(会社では私の後輩) |
superior cloth (上質の布地), a senior judge (上席判事), juniors (年下の者), seniors (年長者)。
The population of Tokyo is larger than that of New York.(東京の人口はニューヨーク市より多い)(that = the population) この文を〜larger than New Yorkとすると正しくない。 |
15-2-3. 最上級
A〜the+最上級+of all〜 [in〜]) |
He is the tallest of all.(彼がみんなの中でいちばん背が高い) |
Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan.(富士山は日本で一番高い山です) |
I like summer best.(私は夏が一番好きだ) |
He studies best of all when he is alone.(彼は1人でいるときが一番勉強する) |
Give me the smaller of the two.(2つの中の小さい方をください) |
② 比較級はmuch, (by) far, still, a lotなどで意味を強めることがある。
This book is much more interesting tha that.(この本はあれよりはるかに面白い) |
This is far better than that.(これはあれよりはるかに良い) |
He is by far the tallest player.(断然背の高い選手) |
1 | The most important thing is this.(最も重要なことはこれ) |
---|---|
2 | I like him most.((みんなの中で)彼がいちばん好きだ) |
3 | Most (of the) Japanese people are hardworking.(たいていの日本人は勤勉だ) |
4 | He is a most important man.(彼はたいへん重要な人物だ) |
4はa most = a veryの意味。
原級 | She is as clever as (she is) beautiful.(彼女は美人であるとおなじくらい頭も良い→美人であるばかりでなく頭も良い) |
---|---|
比較級 | She is more clever than beautiful.(= She is clever rather than beautiful.)(彼女は美人というより才女である) The remark is more witty than just.(この意見は機知に富んではいるが正しくない) ※ この語法では、more+原級+than+原級の形をとる。 |
最上級 | This mountain is highest at this point.(この山はこの地点が最も高い) The flower are most beautiful at this time of the year.(この花は一年で今が一番美しい) ※ このように、同一物の中の比較の時は、最上級でもtheを付けない。 |
