Happy is the man who knows himself.<補語>(己を知る者は幸せである) (cf. The man who knows himself is happy.) |
Her three daughters I know very well.<目的語>(彼女の3人の娘を私はよく知っている) (cf. I know her three daughters very well.) |
ビートルズのポールの作品All My Loving の歌詞では、「All my loving, I will send to you」という歌詞になっていますが、倒置を元に戻すと「I will send all my loving to you」で第3文型になります。send(送る)は、第4文型 S+sent+IO+DOと、第3文型 S+sent+O+to (somebody)になる動詞です。 I will send all my loving to youならこれから送るわけです(届くかどうかはあとでわかることになります)。I will send you all my lovingとすると何となく違和感があります。I sent you all my lovingであれば、あなたにall my lovingを送った(そして届いた)という意味になります。
Out rushed the man and his wife.<副詞>(わっとばかりにその男と妻は飛び出した) (cf. The man and his wife rushed out.) |
Only after visiting a peaceful country can we truly enjoy the real beauty of nature.<副詞句>(平和な田舎を訪れたあとで、初めて自然の美しさは味わえるものだ) (cf. We can truly enjoy the real beauty of nature only after visiting a peaceful country.) |
Not a word did he say.<副詞句>(彼は一言もしゃべらなかった) (cf. He did not say a word.) |
Never in my life have I heard or seen such a thing.<否定の副詞句>(今までただの1度もそんなことを見聞きしたことはない) (cf. I have never heard or seen such a thing in my life.) |
Scarcely had I run out before the house burnt down.<目的語>(彼女の3人の娘を私はよく知っている) (cf. I had scarcely run out before the house burnt down.)
All You Need Is Loveの歌詞に見られる倒置と二重否定
All You Need Is Love | There's nothing you can do that can't be done |
There's nothing (you can do) that can't be done.
(a) | Nothing you can sing that can't be sung. = You can sing nothing that can't be sung. |
(b) | Nothing you can make that can't be made. = You can make nothing that can't be made. |
(c) | No one you can save that can't be saved. = You can save no one that can't be saved. |
(d) | Nothing you can know that isn't known. = You can know nothing that isn't known. |
(e) | Nothing you can see that isn't shown. = You can see nothing that isn't shown. |
(a) | You can sing nothing that can't be sung |
(b) | You can make nothing that can't be made |
(c) | You can save no one that can't be saved |
(d) | You can know nothing that isn't known |
(e) | You can see nothing that isn't shown |
23-2-1. soとneither [nor]
I am hungry.---So am I.<肯定>(僕おなかがすいたー僕も) |
don't like carrots---Neither do I.<否定>(わたしは人参がきらいー私もよ) | He is not studying very hard, nor is he doing anything else in particular.<否定>(彼は懸命に勉強してもいないし、何か特別なことをしてもいない) |
So am I., Neither do I.ともに単語が3つあるが、文の両端を強く、真ん中を弱く発音する。また、soの時、倒置せず、So I am.
Should you require anything else, ring the bell for the attendant.= If you should require …(もし他に入用のものがありましたら、ベルを鳴らして係員をお呼びください)<副詞> |
Had he not been killed in the accident, he would have been elected President.= If he had not been killed in the accident, he would have been elected President.(事故死していなかったら、彼は大統領に選ばれていたことだろうに) |
I've Just Seen A Faceの歌詞では仮定法でifを省略した倒置が見られる。
I've Just Seen A Face | Had it been another day, I might have looked the other way(もしそれが別の日だったら僕は目をそむけていたかもしれなかった)= If it had been another day, I might have looked the other way |
If I Needed Someone | Had you come some other day, then it might not have been like this(君がもし別の日に来ていたなら、こんな風にはならなかったかもしれないね)= If you had come some other day, then it might not have been like this |
23-2-3. No sooner 〜 than …
No sooner had I arrived than I fell sick. = I had no sooner arrived than I fell sick.(私は到着するやいなや気持ちが悪くなった[体調が悪くなった]) |
Soft-Hearted Hana | No sooner had I ooped it down I felt so far off from the ground I stood on. |
Hero as he wasの型
Hero as he was, he was not boastful.= Though he was a hero, he was not boastful.(彼は英雄ではあったが、誇らしげなところがなかった) |
Young as she is, she has a lot of experience.= Though she is young, she has a lot of experience.(彼女は若いけれどもいろいろな経験をしている) |
Sitting up in this bed was the mother who had been waiting for her little son to come to kiss her goodbye.(このベッドに身を起こして、母親は幼な子がお別れのキスをしに来るのを待っていたのであった)<現在分詞> |
The time was 12 noon and there were several people in the bank. They were standing at the counter. Behind the counter were two clerks-a girl and a man.<前置詞句>(時は正午、銀行内には7〜8人の人がいて、カウンターの所に立っていた。
