25-1. 省略
The house was sold while (it was) being built.(まだ建築中なのにその家は売られた) |
The old man sat still, closing his eyes as if (he was) resigning himself to his fate.(そのおじいさんは運命に任せ切っているかのように、目を閉じてじっとすわっていました) |
Don't speak unless (you are) spoken to.(話しかけられなければ話すな) |
For No One | No sign of love behind the tears (which are) cried for no one (by her) |
Wait | We'll forget the tears (which) we've cried |
Tears are cried (by her). She cried tears.にfor no oneを付けると、She cried tears for no one. Tears are cried for no one (by her). No sign of love behind the tears cried for no oneは、No sign of love behind the tears.とThe tears are cried for no one (by her).を関係代名詞で繋いだものと考えることができます(あるいは、No sign of love behind the tears.とShe cried tears for no one. No sign of love behind the tears she cried for no one. No sign of love behind the tears which are cried for no one (by her). No sign of love behind the tears cried for no one. Waitの場合はWe've cried tears.をWe'll forget the tears. We'll forget the tears which we've cried. We'll forget the tears we've criedとなります。
Get Back | Get back to (the place) where you once belonged |
---|
He is taller than I (am tall).(彼の方が私より背が高い) |
It is warmer this year than (it was warm) last year.(今年は去年と比べると暖かい) |
You may go to the dance, if you want to (go).(もし行きたいならダンスに行ってもよい) |
We walked along the railroad tracks to Calwa, and (we walked) along the state way to Malaga.(私達は線路沿いに歩いてキャルワへ行き、さらに州道をマラガまで行った) |
In many country towns in Ireland, television was unknown, movies (were) rare, and dance halls (were) confined to the young or unmarried people.(アイルランドの田舎の町では、テレビはまだないし、映画館はめったにない、またダンスホールは若者か独身者に限られていた) この文では共通要素であるwereが省略されている。 |
「ウサギの耳はロバより長い」 →The ear of a hare are longer than those (=the ear) of a donkey.
The climate of Italy is as mild as that [the climate] of Japan.(イタリアの気候は日本と同じくらい温和です) |
