What would you do if you saw a ghost?
If you ran all the way, you could get there in a half hour.
If you knew his address, I would tell it to you. (もしあの人の住所を知っていれば、あなたに教えてあげるのだけど)= As I don't know it, I can't tell you.
If I had known his address, I would have told it to you. (もしあの人の住所を知っていたら、あなたに教えてあげたのだけど)= As I didn't know it, I couldn't tell you.
If I had studied harder then, I would have passed the examination.
I wish I had enough land. (土地が十分あればなあ)= I'm sorry I don't have enough land.<現在のこと> |
I wish I had learned German.
If + 主語 + should …, 主語 + (should [shall] または would [will] または could [can] または might [may]) + 原形 |
If + 主語 + were to …, 主語 + (should または would または could または might) + 原形 |
If you should annoy the cat, he'll scratch you.(まさかとは思うけど、もしその猫を苛めたりすればひっかかれますよ) |
If you were to meet her, what would you say to her?(もし万が一彼女に会うようなことになったら、何と言ってやりますか) |
If Onono Komachi were to be alive today, could she surely win the World Beauty Contest?(もし小野小町が今日生きていたら、ミスワールドコンテストで優勝するだろうか) |
a |
I wish my brother were alive.(今生きていればよいなあと今思う) |
b |
I wished my brother were alive.(今生きていればよいなあと過去のある時思った) |
c |
I wish my brother had been alive.(兄があの時生きていてくれたらなあと思う) |
d |
I wished my brother had been alive.(兄があの時生きていてくれたらなあと思った) |
When I'm Sixty-Four |
And if you say the word, I could stay with you. |
a |
I propose (that) we elect the chairman first.(まず議長を選出するよう提案します) |
b |
The teacher recommended that everyone of us buy that dictionary.(先生は各人にその辞書を買うように勧めた) |
上記の用法はアメリカ英語に多く、イギリス英語では〜that we should elect …, 〜that everyone should buy …
18-3-1. If only 「〜さえするなら」
1 |
He would be a perfect gentleman if only he could stop drinking.
If only the rain would stop! = I wish the rain would stop.
18-3-2. If it were not for〜 と If it had not been for〜「〜がなければ、〜がなかったら」
1 |
If it were not for water, what would happen.
2 |
If it had not been for your help, I might not have succeeded.
If it were not for〜 や If it had not been for〜 の代わりに without や but for が文語で使われることがある。
18-3-3. as if [as though]+仮定法「(まるで〜である(あった)かのように)」
1 |
He talks as if [as though] he knew everything.(あの男はあたかも何もかも知っているかのような口ぶりで話す)<仮定法過去> |
2 |
She looks as if [as though] she had seen a ghost.(彼女はまるで幽霊を見たかのような顔つきだった)<仮定法過去完了> |

2 |
The woman closed her eyes as if remembering something.(その婦人は何かを思い出しているかのように目を閉じた)
くだけた英語ではIf I was younger, …
1 |
It is [looks] as if [as though] he knows something.(まるであいつが何か知っているようだ) |
2 |
It looks as if [as though] everything is OK.(万事問題はないみたいだ) |
18-3-4. It is time+仮定法過去「もう〜していい頃だ」

18-3-6. even if [even though]「
Even if [Even though] it fell, it would not break.
She Said She Said |
Even though you know what you know |

18-4-1. Ifの省略
1 |
Had I much money, I would go abroad. = If I had much money, I would go abroad.
2 |
Had I known that beforehand, I would not have made a mistake.= If I had known that beforehand, I would not have made a mistake.(あらかじめそれを知っていたら、間違いをせずに済んだものを) |
