20-3-1. 分詞構文とは
同時または引き続いて起こる2つの動作(または状態)を、接続詞を使わないでその一方を分詞で表すことができる。これが分詞構文である。分詞構文は一部を除き文語体である。
分詞構文の作り方
接続詞を 用いた文 |
接続詞+S1+V1〜, S2+V2〜. |
分詞構文 |
V1の現在分詞(ing型), S2+V2〜. |
手順:1. 接続詞をとる。
2. S1をとる。
3. V1を分詞形にする。
※ S2は分詞の「意味上の主語」になる。

When he saw a policeman, he ran away.(警察官を見ると、彼は逃げた) |
分詞構文 |
Seeing a policeman, he ran away.(警察官を見ると、彼は逃げた) |
接続詞を 用いた文 |
As he was wounded in the leg, he could hardly walk.(足に傷を負ったので、彼はほとんど歩くことができなかった) |

注)否定のnot, neverは、常に分詞の前に置く。完了形「have not+過去分詞」の場合でも、Not having〜になる。
20-3-2. 分詞構文の用法
A. 基本用法(分詞の意味上の主語=主文の主語)
20-3-2-A-1. 時を示すもの「〜すると」「〜しながら」「〜したあと」
Arriving at the airport, he found that the plane had already taken off.= When he arrived at the airport, he found that the plane had already taken off.(空港についたら飛行機は飛び立ってしまっていた) |
Walking along the road, I sang a song.= While I was walking along the road, I sang a song.(道路を歩きながら、歌を歌った) |
My train started from Osaka at 7, arriving in Tokyo at 10.= My train started from Osaka at 7, and arrived in Tokyo at 10.(列車は大阪を7時に出発し、東京に10時に着いた) |
20-3-2-A-2. 理由を示すもの「〜なので」「は〜なので…」
(Being) a kind man, he is liked by all.= As [Because] he is a kind man, he is liked by all.(親切なので、彼はみんなから好かれている)
※ このような場合もふつうBeingが省略される。 |
Romeo, believing that Juliet was dead, he decided to kill himself.= As Romeo believed that Juliet was dead, he decided to kill himself.(ロメオはジュリエットが死んだものと思い込んで、自殺を決心した)
※ 分詞構文が文中に挿入されている場合、付随的な理由「ところでそれは〜なので」を表すものが多い。 |
20-3-2-A-3. 付帯状況を示すもの「〜しながら」「〜して」
I read the newspaper carefully, hoping there would be some good news from my country.(私は母国に関するよいニュースがあってほしいと思いつつ、新聞を丹念に読んだ) |
She entered, accompanied by her terrier.(彼はテリヤ犬を従えて入ってきた)
※ 付帯状況の分詞構文は、主文の後ろにくる場合が多いが、文中にくることもある。この種の文は、ふつう接続詞を使って書き換えられない。 |
20-3-2-A-4. 条件および譲歩を示すもの「〜すれば」「〜とはいえ」
Turning to the left at the third corner, you will find the station.= If you turn to the left at the third corner, you will find the station.(3番目の角を左折すれば駅があります) |
Admitting what you say, I still think I'm right.= Though I admit what you say, I still think I'm right.(君の言うことは認めるにせよ、まだ私の方が正しいと思う) |
B. 独立分詞構文(分詞の意味上の主語≠主文の主語)
20-3-2-B-1. 「意味上の主語+分詞」(分詞の意味上の主語が主文の主語と異なる時は、これを前に置く)
Night coming on, the boys went home.= As night came on, the boys went home. (夜になったので、男の子達は家に帰った) |
20-3-2-B-2. 慣用的に意味上の主語を省く場合
意味上の主語がwe, theyなど、「漠然と一般の人々」の場合はこれを省く。慣用句として覚える。
Strictly speaking, this is not good English. (厳密に言うと、これは正しい英語ではない) |
Considering his age, he is rather a big child. (年を考えると、彼は大柄な子供だ) |
Judging from [by] his appearance, he is ill. (見たところでは彼は病気のようだ) |
その他、Generally [Roughly] speaking(一般的には)、Talking of〜(〜の話をすれば)、Coming to〜(〜のことになれば)など。
with構文
意味上の主語がある分詞構文(独立分詞構文)が付帯状況を示す場合、さらにその前にwithを添えた表現になることがある。
He came back, with his coat dripping. (コートから雫をポタポタたらしながら戻ってきた) |
He thought quietly for a while, with his eye closed. (彼は目を閉じたまま、しばらく考えていた) |
この分詞の位置に、形容詞・副詞や前置詞(前置詞+名詞)などがくることもある。これらを一括してwith構文と呼ぶことがある。
この構文は現代英語で非常に多く用いられる。
Don't speak with your mouth full.<形容詞> (ほおばったまましゃべるな) |
He came out, with a big book under his arm.<前置詞句> (小脇に大きな本を抱えて出て来た) |
さらに、このwithが省略された簡潔な表現もある。
He sat still, pipe in (his) mouth.<前置詞句> (パイプを加えてじっと座っていた) |
